Why Knysna? Three years ago CSI was tasked with investigating leaving a positive legacy footprint in Knysna, where Barlow Rand had owned Thesens & Co in the 80’s and early 90’s.
When Barlow Rand unbundled, our company closed down Thesens & Co and sold off the islands to developers for the high density Thesen Islands housing estate. At the time, the development was unpopular with locals, who felt the building designs (although they won several international design awards) were out of character with Knysna. In addition, many years ago, Thesens & Co used to treat timber for ship building and, later, poles on the islands. It took Barloworld a number of years and millions of rand to rehabilitate the area to rigorous international standards.
After community consultation, which indicated the need for research and training capacity in the locality, the Barloworld Trust decided to re-establish the Knysna Basin Project (KBP) with Rhodes University by re-equipping a field laboratory. The lab is situated in the industrial area overlooking George Rex’s grave and was officially opened by the mayor of Knysna, Mrs Eleanor Bouw-Spies, on Thursday last week. Barloworld executive director, Peter Surgey, who grew up in the area, has agreed to become the KBP champion.
The KBP will monitor the quality of water, and study marine life and environmental conditions in the estuary, working with universities to provide practical training for biologists. It will also collaborate with local government and environmental organisations to develop and implement a management plan for the estuary and its catchment areas – which will include identifying pollutants - and dealing with the offenders.
